What you don’t know about Mary Kom
Mande Sungnejang Mary Kom (b. 1 March 1983) was an Indian boxer. Kom belongs to the Kom tribe of Northeast India. He was born in Gangathe in Surachandpur, Manipur.
Mary Kom is, without a doubt, one of the most attractive athletes in this world. Born in the poorest region of India.
But – overcoming the objections of his family – he moved to the city, became a boxer after forcing a local coach to pick him up, and became a champion.
Com has won eight APA World Boxing Championships since its inception in 2001 (six gold, one silver and one bronze, most recently in 2019), leading him to the AIBA World Rankings in Flying Weight, and also to the finals at the London 2012 Olympics. He was defeated by Nicola Adams and won the bronze medal.
She is the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Games (2014) and the Commonwealth Games (2018).
But she is a trailblazer in more ways than one. Kom has joined the fight as a mother of three young children, she runs a sports club in her home state of Manipur, trains youngsters for free in the box, and she has become a member of the state assembly, the upper house of parliament by the Indian government.
The Manipur government has given him the title of “Meethoi Lima”. He has received Padma Bhushan, Arjuna Award, Padma Shri, Rajiv Gandhi Kale Ratna Award and many more.
The Hindi biopic ‘Mary Kom’, released in 2014, is also based on her life.
