History
Neuschwanstein Castle, an extensive fort near Fussen, Germany, was built on a rocky outcrop over the Ballad Valley in the Bavarian Alps by order of King Louis II (“Mad King Ludwig”) of Bavaria.
Construction began in 1868 and was never completed. The cost of building Linderhof and Neuschwanstein is huge – in today’s dollars, the price in particular comes to almost $ 250 million.

Opening hours for Schloss Neuschwanstein and Hohenshwanga Palaces. Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau are open daily, including Mondays and most public holidays. Schloss Hohenshwanga is usually closed only on December 24th and January 1st.
Ticket Details
Neuschwanstein welcomes nearly 1.5 million visitors a year, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. For security reasons the palace can only be visited during a 35 minute guided tour and no photography is allowed inside the castle.
There are also specialized guided tours that focus on specific topics. During the peak season from June to August, New Zealand receives 6,000 visitors a day, and unbooked guests have to wait for hours.
Those without tickets can walk the long path from the foothills to the top of the hill and visit the grounds and courtyard without tickets, but will not be allowed inside the castle.
Ticket sales are handled exclusively through the Ticket Center in Hohenshwanga. As of 2008, the total audience is over 60 million. In 2004, revenue was recorded at 5 6.5 million.
