The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars

The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. They are regarded as the most famous and prestigious awards in the entertainment industry. Given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements, as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette as a trophy, officially called the “Academy Award of Merit”, although more commonly referred to by its nickname, the “Oscar”. The statuette depicts a knight rendered in the Art Deco style.

History

The first Academy Awards presentation was held on May 16, 1929, at a private dinner function at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people.Since 2004, Academy Award nomination results have been announced to the public in mid-January. Prior to that, the results were announced in early February.

Talberg Memorial Award, and Gordon E. Presents the Sawyer Award. These are not provided annually. In August 2018, the Academy announced that it would be making its debut at the 2019 Festival of Entering the Year category for “Best Achievement in Popular Film”. However, following criticism and confusion, the academy decided to postpone the introduction of the new genre.

To be eligible for an award in a particular year, a film must be on public display in a commercial arena in Los Angeles County for at least one week’s payroll from January 1 to midnight on December 31 that year. Exceptions to this rule include foreign language films, which are submitted by their native country and are not shown in the United States. Documentaries and short films have different eligibility requirements, which are officially submitted by their producers, while the Music Awards require the filing form to be submitted to the musician.
