Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world above sea level and is located on the border of the Mahalangur Himalayas in the Himalayas . Like other high peaks in the region, Mount Everest has long been revered by locals. Its most common Tibetan name, Somolungma, means “Mother of the World Mother” or “Goddess of the Valley”. The Sanskrit name Sagarmatha means “the pinnacle of heaven”. However, its identity was not recognized as the highest point on the Earth’s surface, however, until 1852, the Government of India survey confirmed that fact. In 1865, the mountain, formerly known as Peak XV, was renamed Sir George Everest, the British Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843.

On May 29, 1953, Hillary and Sherpa became the first climbers to confirm that climber Tenzing Norgay had reached the summit of Everest. In 2014, 334 climbing permits were issued in Nepal. These were extended until 2019 due to closure. There were 357 permits to climb Everest in 2015, but the mountain was closed again due to avalanches and earthquakes, and these permits were granted a two-year extension to 2017.
